Oftenthelifecycledataoccurascountofthevitaleventsandarerecordedasintegers.Thepurposeofthisarticleistomodelthefertilitybehaviorbasedonreligious,educational,economic,andoccupationalcharacteristics.TheresponsesofclassifiedgroupsaccordingtothesedeterminantsareexaminedforsignificantinfluenceonfertilityusingPoissonregressionmodel(PRM)basedontheNationalFamilyHealthSurvey-3dataset.TheobservedandpredictedprobabilitiesunderPRMindicatemodalvalueoftwochildrenforthePoissondistributionmodeleddata.Presenceofdominanceoftwochildinthedatamotivatestheauthorstoadoptmultinomialregressionmodel(MRM)inordertolinkfertilitywithvarioussocioeconomicindicatorsresponsibleforfertilityvariation.Choiceoftheexplanatoryfactorsislimitedtotheavailabilityofdata.Trendsandpatternsofpreferenceforbirthcountssuggestthatreligion,caste,wealth,femaleeducation,andoccupationarethedominantfactorsshapingtheobservedbirthprocess.Empiricalanalysissuggeststhatboththemodelsusedinthestudyperformsimilarlyonthesampledata.However,fittingofMRMbytakingbirthcountoftwoascomparisoncategoryshowsimprovedAkaikeinformationcriterionandconsistentAkaikeinformationcriterionvalues.CurrentworkcontributestotheexistingliteratureasitattemptstoprovidemoreinsightintothedeterminantsofIndianfertilityusingPoissonandMRM.
