Inordertoinvestigatetheinfluenceoftheverticalvibrationloadingontheliquefactionofsaturatedsand,onedimensionalmodelforthesaturatedsandwithaverticalvibrationispresentedbasedonthetwophasecontinuousmediatheory.Thedevelopmentoftheliquefactionandtheliquefactionregionareanalyzed.Itisshownthattheverticalvibrationloadingcouldinduceliquefaction.Therateoftheliquefactionincreaseswiththeincreaseoftheinitiallimitstrainorinitialporosityoramplitudeandfrequencyofloading,andincreaseswiththedecreaseofthepermeabilityorinitialmodulus.Itisshownalsothatthereisaphaselaginthesandcolumn.Whenthesandpermeabilitydistributionisnon-uniform,theporepressureandthestrainwillrisesharplywherethepermeabilityisthesmallest,andfracturemightbeinduced.Withthedevelopmentofliquefaction,thestrengthofthesoilfoundationbecomessmallerandsmaller.Inthelimitingcase,landslidesordebrisflowscouldoccur.
