简介:Icewatercontent(IWC)playsimportantrolesinweatherandclimatechange.DeterminingtheIWCsofcirruscloudswithmillimeter-wavelengthradarcanbeproblematicduetoinfluencesoficeparticlerotationontheirbackscatteringcrosssections.Wehereintroducemodelstodescribetheradiationpatternsofsixnonsphericalparticlesofspecificsizes.SimulationsusingHFSSsoftwarewereappliedtodescribethedifferencesresultingfromdifferentorientationsandequivalentspheres.Adoubleexponentialfunctionwasusedforfittingtodescribetherelationshipbetweentheparticles’maximumsizesandbackscatteringcrosssections.Thebackscatteringcrosssectionsofnonsphericaliceparticleswerecomputedbythemethodofmoment,andthoseoftheequivalentsphericalparticleswerecomputedbyLorenz-Mietheoryforthreedifferentorientations:fixed,horizontal,andrandom.AssumingthatamixtureofnonsphericaliceparticlesfollowstheB-Hmixingmodel,thesizedistributionofcirrusparticlesobeystheexponentialdistributionmeasuredbyNASAin2007.BycomputingtheIWCsofcirrusclouds,whichfollowstheabovementionedB-Hmodelandexponentialdistribution,theradarreflectivityfactorsofnonsphericaliceparticlesandequivalentspheresatthreedifferentorientationscanbecomputed.Subsequently,theIWCresultscanbeacquiredbyinputtingtheradarreflectivityvariablesintothewell-knownIWC-Zformula.TheanalysisdescribedheredemonstratesthatwhenusingtheradarreflectivityZ,theorientationmustbeconsideredinordertodeterminetheIWC.Usingequivalentspheretheory,thederivedIWCsunderestimatetheactualIWCs.Theseresultsareimportantforaccuratelyretrievingthemicrophysicalparametersofcirrusclouds.
简介:Rolesofrareearthoxide(RE2O3)additivesinmillimeter-wave(MM)sinteringofAlNwereinvestigatedfromthestandpointsofphasediagram,heatingcharacteristicsofrareearthoxides,andmorphologyofintergranularoxidephase.Inthemillimeter-wavesinteringofAlN,densificationtemperaturedecreasedwiththedecreaseoftheionicradiusofrareearthionandwascloselyrelatedwiththeeutectictemperatureintheRE2O3-Al2O3binarysystem.Thelowestdensificationtemperatureinthemillimeter-wavesinteringofAlNwithYb2O3additivewasattributedtothelargestheatingrateofYb2O3·Al2O3binaryoxideundermillimeter-waveradiation.Furthermore,thelowestdensificationtemperaturecouldbeattainedwhileselectingtheYb2O3contentsoastoformtheintergranularphasewiththeeutecticcompositionintheYb2O3-Al2O3binarysystem.TheresultshowedgoodagreementwiththeabovementionedduringthesinteringofSi3N4withYb2O3-Al2O3additive.FromTEMobservation,itwasverifiedthatfilm-likeintergranularoxidephaseformedundermillimeter-waveradiationwasfavorableforattaininghighthermalconductivityintheYb2O3addedAlNs.

简介:Millimeterandterahertzwavephotodetectorshaveawiderangeofapplications.However,thestate-of-the-arttechniqueslagfarbehindtheurgentdemandduetothestructureandperformancelimitations.Here,wereportsensitiveanddirectmillimeterandterahertzwavephotodetectionincompactInGaAs-basedsubwavelengthohmicmetal–semiconductor–metalstructures.Thephotoresponseoriginatesfromunidirectionaltransportationofnonequilibriumelectronsinducedbysurfaceplasmonpolaritonsunderirradiation.ThedetectedquantumenergiesofelectromagneticwavesarefarbelowthebandgapofInGaAs,offering,tothebestofourknowledge,anoveldirectphotoelectricconversionpathwayforInGaAsbeyonditsbandgaplimit.Theachievedroomtemperaturerisetimeandnoiseequivalentpowerofthedetectorare45μsand20pW·Hz^-1∕2,respectively,atthe0.0375THz(8mm)wave.Thedetectedwavelengthistunablebymountingdifferentcouplingantennas.Roomtemperatureterahertzimagingofmacroscopicsamplesataround0.166THzisalsodemonstrated.Thisworkopensanavenueforsensitiveandlarge-areauncooledmillimeterandterahertzfocalplanararrays.
