  • 简介:TodateonlyonespeciesofthegenusVaticaLinn.(Dipterocarpaceae)hasbeenidentified,andasubspeciesandthreevarietieshavebeenreportedonHainanIsland,China.However,itremainedcontroversialwhetherthespecieswasVaticamangachapoioranewspeciesVaticahainanensis,andwhetherthesubspeciesorvarietiesaretaxonomicallyvalid.Weevaluatedheremorphometricvariationsof133treescollectedfromninepopulationsandherbariumspecimensofVaticaspp.using16traitsofleafandfruit.Amongthese,leaftraitsvariedmorewithinandamongpopulationsthandidfruittraits.Fourtraitsofratiosweremorestablethandirectly-measuredtraitswithinandamongpopulations.Therangesoflaminalength,laminawidthandheightofmaximumlaminawidthpointwerethegreatestamongthe16traits,whilenumberoflateralveinsvariedleastamongthe12directly-measuredtraits.Measurementsfromall9populationsoverlappedforeachmorphologicaltrait,andvariationofeachtraitwascontinuousamongbothindividualsandpopulations.TherangeofvariationdidnotdistinguishanyspecimenfromV.mangachapoiasdescribedinthefloraofSoutheastAsia.Byclusteranalysis,individualsofeachpopulationaswellasspecimensofeachvarietyformednodistinctclusters.Thepublishedvarietiesthuswerecharacterizedbynodistinguishingvariationsincomparisonwiththeninesampledpopulations.Inconclusion,thenewspeciesV.hainanensisaswellasthesubspeciesandvarietieswerenotsupportedbyourcomparisons,andonlyV.mangachapoiwithoutanysubspeciesorvarietiesoccursonHainanIsland,China.

  • 简介:Background:RecentprojectionsexpectthatVietnamwillbeaffectedmostseverelybyclimatechangewithhighertemperatures,moreprecipitationandrisingsealevels.Especiallyincreasedtemperatureswillworsenthesituationsincities,amplifyingtheurbanheatislandeffect.Greeninfrastructures,i.e.urbantreesareacommontooltoimprovetheurbanmicro-climateforhumans.Vitalandwellgrowingtreesprovidegreatestbenefitssuchasevaporativecooling,shading,airfilteringandcarbonstorage.However,urbantreegrowthisoftennegativelyaffectedbyurbangrowingconditionssuchashighsoilsealingwithcompactedtreepitsprovidingsmallgrowingspaceswithlimitedwater,nutrientandoxygensupply,furtherwarmtemperaturesandhighpollutionemissions.ThisstudyanalyzedthegrowthofurbanandruralAfricanmahogany{Khoyosenegalensis(Desr.)A.Juss.)treesinthecityofHanoi,Vietnamandtheeffectsofthesurroundingclimateconditionsontreegrowth.Results:TheresultsshowedthatruralAfricanmahoganytreesgrewbetterthantreessituatedinthecitycenter,whichiscontrarytootherresultsontreegrowthoftemperateandsubtropicalcitiesworldwide.Moreovertreegrowthwassimilarregardlessofthetimeofgrowth.OtherresultsregardingstemgrowthofAfricanmahoganylocatedindifferentareasofHanoi(east,west,north,citycenter)revealedabettergrowthinthenorthernandwesternoutskirtsofthecitycomparedtothegrowthoftreesinthecitycenter.Conclusion:AfricanmahoganytreesintheurbancentersofHanoishowedadecreasedgrowthcomparedtoruraltrees,whichwaslikelyinducedbyalowground-waterlevelandhighpollutionrates.Inviewofclimatechangeandglobalwarming,thedecreasedtreegrowthinthecitycentermayalsoaffeatreeserviceprovisionsuchasshadingandcooling.ThoseclimatemitigationsolutionsarestronglyneededinareasseverelyaffectedbyclimatechangeandglobalwarmingsuchasVietnam.

  • 简介:ThenorthernmarginoftheSouthChinaSea,asatypicalextensionalcontinentalmargin,hasrelativelystrongintraplateseismicity.ComparedwiththeactivezonesofNanaoIsland,Yangjiang,andHeyuan,seismicityinthePearlRiverEstuaryisrelativelylow.However,aML4.0earthquakein2006occurrednearDanganIsland(DI)offshoreHongKong,andthissitewasadjacenttothesourceofthehistoricalM5.8earthquakein1874.TorevealtheseismogenicmechanismofintraplateearthquakesinDI,wesystematicallyanalyzedthestructuralcharacteristicsinthesourceareaofthe2006DIearthquakeusingintegrated24-channelseismicprofiles,onshore–offshorewide-angleseismictomography,andnaturalearthquakeparameters.WeascertainedthelocationsofNW-andNE-trendingfaultsintheDIseaandfoundthattheNE-trendingDIfaultmainlydippedsoutheastatahighangleandcutthroughthecrustwithanobviouslow-velocityanomaly.TheNW-trendingfaultdippedsouthwestwithasimilarhighangle.The2006DIearthquakewasadjacenttotheintersectionoftheNE-andNW-trendingfaults,whichsuggestedthattheintersectionofthetwofaultswithdifferentstrikescouldprovideafavorableconditionforthegenerationandtriggeringofintraplateearthquakes.Crustalvelocitymodelshowedthatthehigh-velocityanomalywasimagedinthewestofDI,butadistinctentitywithlow-velocityanomalyintheuppercrustandhigh-velocityanomalyinthelowercrustwasfoundinthesouthofDI.Boththe1874and2006DIearthquakesoccurredalongtheedgeofthedistinctentity.Twoverticalcross-sectionsnearlyperpendiculartothestrikesoftheintersectingfaultsrevealedgoodspatialcorrelationsbetweenthe2006DIearthquakeandthelowtohighspeedtransitioninthedistinctentity.Thisresultindicatedthatthetransitionalzonemightbeaweaklystructuralbodythatcanstorestrainenergyandreleaseitasabrittlefailure,resultinginanearthquake-pronearea.

  • 简介:Edgedetectionenablesidentificationofgeomorphologicunitboundariesandthusassistswithgeomorphicalmapping.Inthispaper,anintelligentedgeidentificationmethodisproposedandimageprocessingtechniquesareappliedtomulti-beambathymetrydata.Toaccomplishthis,acolorimageisgeneratedbythebathymetry,andaweightedmethodisusedtoconvertthecolorimagetoagrayimage.Asthequalityoftheimagehasasignificantinfluenceonedgedetection,differentfiltermethodsareappliedtothegrayimageforde-noising.Thepeaksignal-to-noiseratioandmeansquareerrorarecalculatedtoevaluatewhichfiltermethodismostappropriatefordepthimagefilteringandtheedgeissubsequentlydetectedusinganimagebinarizationmethod.Traditionalimagebinarizationmethodscannotmanagethecomplicatedunevenseafloor,andthereforeabinarizationmethodisproposedthatisbasedonthedifferencebetweenimagepixelvalues;theappropriatethresholdforimagebinarizationisestimatedaccordingtotheprobabilitydistributionofpixelvaluedifferencesbetweentwoadjacentpixelsinhorizontalandverticaldirections,respectively.Finally,aneight-neighborhoodframeisadoptedtothinthebinaryimage,connecttheintermittentedge,andimplementcontourextraction.Experimentalresultsshowthatthemethoddescribedherecanrecognizethemainboundariesofgeomorphologicunits.Inaddition,theproposedautomaticedgeidentificationmethodavoidsuseofsubjectivejudgment,andreducestimeandlaborcosts.

  • 简介:WhiletheAntarcticSlopeCurrent(ASC)hasbeenintensivelystudiedfortheEastAntarcticaslopeareaandtheWeddellSea,itsfateinthewesternAntarcticPeninsula(WAP)regionremainsmuchlessknown.DatafromtwocruisesconductedneartheSouthShetlandIslands(SSIs)andtheElephantIsland(EI),oneinaustralsummerof2004andoneinaustralwinterof2006,wereanalyzedtoprovideabroadpictureofthecirculationpatternoverthecontinentalslopeofthesurveyedarea,andaninsightintothedynamicalbalanceofthecirculation.Theresultsindicatethatsouthwestwardcurrentsarepresentovertheupperslopeinthestudyarea,indicatingtheASCintheWAPregion.NeartheShackletonGap(SG)northoftheEI,thesouthwestwardslopecurrentsneartheshelfbreakarecharacterizedbyawatermasscolderandfresherthantheambientwater,whichproducescross-slopedensitygradientsandthenverticalshearofthealong-slope(oralong-isobath)velocity.Theverticalshearisassociatedwithareversalofthealong-slopecurrentfromnortheastwardatsurfacetosouthwestwardindeeperlayers,oradepth-intensificationofthesouthwestwardslopecurrents.ThewatermasswithtemperatureandsalinitycharacteristicssimilartotheobservedcoldandfreshwaterisalsorevealedonthesouthernslopeoftheScotiaSea,suggestingthatthiscoldandfreshwaterisoriginatedfromtheScotiaSeaslopeandflowssouthwestwardthroughtheSG.OvertheshelfnorthoftheSSIs,thecoldandfreshwatermassisalsoobservedandoriginatesmainlyfromtheBransfieldStrait.Inthisarea,verticalstructureofthesouthwestwardslopecurrentsisassociatedwiththeonshoreintrusionoftheupperCircumpolarDeepWaterthatcreatescross-slopedensitygradients.

  • 简介:Decreasingtherisksandgeohazardsassociatedwithdrillingengineeringinhigh-temperaturehigh-pressure(HTHP)geologicsettingsbeginswiththeimplementationofpre-drillingpredictiontechniques(PPTs).ToimprovetheaccuracyofgeopressurepredictioninHTHPhydrocarbonreservoirsoffshoreHainanIsland,wemadeacomprehensivesummaryofcurrentPPTstoidentifyexistingproblemsandchallengesbyanalyzingtheglobaldistributionofHTHPhydrocarbonreservoirs,theresearchstatusofPPTs,andthegeologicsettinganditsHTHPformationmechanism.OurresearchresultsindicatethattheHTHPformationmechanisminthestudyareaiscausedbymultiplefactors,includingrapidloading,diapirintrusions,hydrocarbongeneration,andthethermalexpansionofporefluids.Duetothismulti-factorinteraction,acloudofHTHPhydrocarbonreservoirshasdevelopedintheYing-QiongBasin,butonlytraditionalPPTshavebeenimplemented,basedontheassumptionofconditionsthatdonotconformtotheactualgeologicenvironment,e.g.,Bellotti’slawandEaton’slaw.Inthispaper,wefocusontheseissues,identifysomechallengesandsolutions,andcallforfurtherPPTresearchtoaddressthedrawbacksofpreviousworksandmeetthechallengesassociatedwiththedeepwatertechnologygap.Inthisway,wehopetocontributetotheimprovedaccuracyofgeopressurepredictionpriortodrillingandprovidesupportforfutureHTHPdrillingoffshoreHainanIsland.

  • 简介:AtUTC2018-01-1002:51:31,anMw7.6earthquakeoccurred44kmeastofGreatSwanIsland,Honduras(location17.469°N,83.520°W,depth10km,accordingtotheUnitedStatesGeologicalSurvey).Wecarriedoutstudiesofthefocalmechanismandruptureprocessoftheearthquake,usingseismicdatafromtheIRISdatacenter.Forthefocalmechanismsolution,apointsourcemodelwasusedtoinvert26far-fieldP-waveformsand26SHwaveformswithhighS/Nratioandrelativelyevenazimuthcoverage(epicentraldistance30°<△<90°);thentheresult(Figure1)wasusedtoconstructafinitefaultmodelforruptureprocessinversion(YaoZXandJiC,1997;WangWMetal.,2008),resultinginapreliminarymodeloftheslipdistributionofthisearthquake(Figures2–4).Thecalculatedseismicmomentis2.41×10^20N·mandtheestimatedearthquakemagnitudeMw=7.5.Themaximumslipisabout1900cm.
