TheconceptofIntelligentMechanicalDesign(IMD)ispresentedtoshowhowamechanicalstructurecanbedesignedtoaffectrobotcontrollability,simplificationandtaskperformance.Exploringthisconceptproduceslandmarksintheterritoryofmechanicalrobotdesignintheformofsevendesignprinciples.Thedesignprinciples,whichwecalltheMecha-TelligencePrinciples(MTP),provideguidanceonhowtodesignmechanicsforautonomousmobilerobots.Theseprinciplesguideustoasktherightquestionswheninvestigatingissuesconcerningself-controllable,reliable,feasible,andcompatiblemechanicsforautonomousmobilerobots.ToshowhowMTPcanbeappliedinthedesignprocessweproposeanovelmethodology,namedasMecha-TelligenceMethodology(MTM).Mechanicaldesignbytheproposedmethodologyisbasedonpreferenceclassificationoftherobotspecificationdescribedbyinteractionoftherobotwithitsenvironmentandthephysicalparametersoftherobotmechatronics.Afterdefiningnewterms,weinvestigatethefeasibilityoftheproposedmethodologytothemechanicaldesignofanautonomousmobilesewerinspectionrobot.Inthisindustrialprojectweshowhowapassive-activeintelligentmovingmechanismcanbedesignedusingtheMTMandemployedinthefield.
