Otoacoustic emissions recorded in people with chronic migraine

Migraine,amoderatetoseverechronicheadacheoccurringononeorbothsides,isacommondiseaseaffectsyoungpeople.Althoughhearinglossinsubjectswithmigraineisnotrare,thecorrelationofmigrainewithhearinglossisnotclear.Inthisstudy,weexaminedhearinglossinyoungmigrainesubjectstodetermineifmigrainemaybeafactorincausingcochleardysfunction.Sevencollegestudentswithmigraineandthreeagematchedsubjectswithouthistoryofmigrainewereassessedusingextendedhighfrequencyaudiometryanddistortionproductotoacousticemissions(DPOAEs).Therewasnosignificantdifferenceinregularaudiomeirythresholdbetweenthemigrainegroupandthecontrolgroup.However,highfrequencyaudiometry(9-16kHz)showedthresholdsat25dBnHLorhigherinsixoutoftwentyearsinthemigrainegroup.TheamplitudeofDPOAEswerereducedformorethan10dBinthemigrainegroupincomparisonwiththecontrolgroup.ThesedatasuggestthatmigrainemayaffectcochleardysfunctionevidencedbythereducedamplitudeofDPOAEandhighfrequencypure-toneaudiometry.
