Fiber-opticlaser–ultrasoundgenerationisbeingusedinanincreasingnumberofapplications,includingmedicaldiagnosis,materialcharacterization,andstructuralhealthmonitoring.However,mostcurrentlyusedfiber-opticultrasonictransducersalloweffectiveultrasoundgenerationatonlyasinglelocation,namely,atthefibertip,althoughtherehavebeenafewlimitedproposalsforachievingmultipointultrasoundgenerationalongthelengthofafiber.Herewepresentanovelfiber-opticultrasoundtransducerthatusesthecore-offsetsplicingoffiberstoeffectivelygenerateultrasoundatmultiplelocationsalongthefiber.Theproposedlaser–ultrasonictransducercanproduceabalancedstrengthsignalbetweenultrasonicgenerationpointsbyreasonablycontrollingtheoffsetsofthefibers.Theproposedtransducerhasotheroutstandingcharacteristics,includingsimplefabricationandlowcost.
