Thefieldofmechanicsofbiologicalandbio-inspiredmaterialsunderwentanexcitingdevelopmentoverthepastseveralyears,whichmadeitstandatthecuttingedgeofbothengineeringmechanicsandbiomechanics.Asanintriguinginterdisciplinaryresearchfield,itaimsatelucidatingthefundamentalprinciplesinnature'sdesignofstrong,multi-functionalandsmartMaterialsbyfocusingontheassembly,deformation,stabilityandfailureofthematerials.Theseprinciplesshouldhavewideapplicationsinnotonlymaterialsciencesandmechanicalengineeringbutalsobiomedicalengineering.Forinstance,theknowledgeinMechanicalprinciplesofbiologicalmaterialsisveryhelpfulforaddressingsomemajorchallengesinmaterialsciencesandengineering.Theyalsohavethepotentialtoprovidequantitativeunderstandingabouthowforcesanddeformationaffecthumanbeing'shealth,diseasesandtreatmentattissue,cellularandmolecularlevels.
