Fieldandpotexperimentswereconductedusingindicaricevarietieswithdifferentialchalkiness.Thereweresignificantdifferencesinrootactivityamongthevarieties.Thepercentagesofchalkygrainsandchalkyareawerebothnegativelycorrelatedwithrootactivityexpressedasα-naphthylamineoxidationability(RA)pergramoffreshroot(RAfw),RAperspikelet(RAgrn),orRApersinkcapacity(RAsink).TheRAsinkwasmorecloselyrelatedtochalkinessthanRAfwandRAgrnwhenvarietiesdifferedgreatlyinpaniclesizeandgrainweight.ApplicationofNO3--Nfertilizeratheadingresultedinhigherrootactivityandreducedchalkiness.Applicationof10daysafterheadingunderdifferentchemicaltreatments(r=-0.8567*andr=-0.9211**,respectively).
