Using NWP to Assess the Influence of the Arctic Atmosphere on Midlatitude Weather and Climate

摘要 TheinfluenceoftheArcticatmosphereonNorthernHemispheremidlatitudetroposphericweatherandclimateisexploredbycomparingtheskilloftwosetsof14-dayweatherforecastexperimentsusingtheECMWFmodelwithandwithoutrelaxationoftheArcticatmospheretowardsERA-Interimreanalysisdataduringtheintegration.TwopathwaysareidentifiedalongwhichtheArcticinfluencesmidlatitudeweather:apronouncedoneoverAsiaandEasternEurope,andasecondaryoneoverNorthAmerica.Ingeneral,linkagesarefoundtobestrongest(weakest)duringborealwinter(summer)whentheamplitudeofstationaryplanetarywavesovertheNorthernHemisphereisstrongest(weakest).NodiscernibleArcticimpactisfoundovertheNorthAtlanticandNorthPacificregion,whichisconsistentwithpredominantlysouthwesterlyflow.Ananalysisoftheflow-dependenceofthelinkagesshowsthatanomalousnortherlyflowconditionsincreasetheArcticinfluenceonmidiatitudeweatheroverthecontinents.Specifically,ananomalousnortherlyflowfromtheKaraSeatowardsWestAsialeadstocoldsurfacetemperatureanomaliesnotonlyoverWestAsiabutalsooverEasternandCentralEurope.Finally,theresultsofthisstudyarediscussedinthelightofpotentialmidlatitudebenefitsofimprovedArcticpredictioncapabilities.
