Compressedthinlayersofceramicfiberinsulationareusedashightemperatureinsulatinglayersaswellasmechanicalsupportforcatalystcoatedceramicmonolithsinautomotiveemissioncontroldevices.Minimizationofenergylosses,choiceofmaterialandthicknessofcompressedinsulatinglayerarebasedonknowledgeoftheirthermalphysicalproperties.Currently,consistentmeasurementsofmaterialsinacompressedstate,astheywouldbeinemissioncontrolapplications,areabsentduetotheabsenceofsuitablemethodsforsuchtests.Atestmethodwasdevelopedformeasurementofthethermalconductivityofcompressedthinfiberlayers.Thispapersummarizestheresultsofthermalconductivityanddiffusivitymeasurementsof27compressedfiberalumina-silica-vermiculitematerialsintherangeof200-950℃.Thermalphysicalpropertiesasafunctionoftemperature,density/mechanicalpressure,thicknessandcompositionofinsulatinglayersarepresented.Thewholesetofexperimentaldataisgeneralizedon3Dsurfaceplotsanddescribedbypolynomialfunctions.Thepossibleheattransfermechanismsgoverningapparentthermalconductivityofpressedinsulationlayersarediscussed.
