简介:Studiesdemonstrateadeclineinandrogenswithageandthisresultsintheandropause.Theobjectiveofthispaperistoreviewtheliteratureonhormonalchangesthatoccurintheagingmalesanddetermineifthereareassociationsbetweendecreasedtestosterone,dehydroepiandrosterone(DHEA)anddecreasedcognitivefunction.Trialsofandrogenreplacementanditsimpactoncognitivefunctionwillalsobeanalyzed.MethodofanalysiswillbebyathoroughsearchofarticlesonMEDLINE,theIntemetandmajorabstractdatabases.Resultsoftheauthor'sownresearchin302menoftheassociationofmemorylossasasymptomintheandropausewillbepresented.Inaddition,theauthorsopentrialoftestosteronereplacementinhypogonadicmenwithAlzheimer'sdiseasewillalsobepresented.Theresultsoftheauthor'strialwillbecomparedwithotherinvestigators.Highendogenoustestosteronelevelpredictedbetterperformanceonvisualspatialtestsinseveralstudies,butnotinallstudies.Likewise,testosteronereplacementinhypogonadicpatientsimprovedcognitivefunctionsinsomebutnotallstudies.Testosteronehasalsobeenshowntoimprovecognitivefunctionineugonadalmen.SeveralstudieshaveshownthatdeclinesinDHEAmaycontributetoAlzheimer'sdiseaseandtheresultsofdoubleblindstudieswithDHEAreplacementanditseffectoncognitionwillalsobepresented.Insummary,thereisstillnoconsensusthatandrogenreplacementisbeneficialincognitivedeclinebutthisoptionmayprovepromisinginsomepatients.
