摘要 Wepresentabio-inspiredstrategyfordesigningembeddedstrainsensorsinspacestructures.Ininsects,thecampaniformsensillumisaholeextendingthroughthecuticlearrangedsuchthatitsshapechangesinresponsetoloads.Theshapechangeisrotatedthrough90?bythesuspensionofabell-shapedcapwhosedeflectionisdetectedbyacellbeneaththecuticle.Itcanbesensitivetodisplacementsoftheorderof1nm.Theessentialmorphology,aholeformedinaplateoffibrouscompositemate-rial,wasmodelledbySkordosetal.whoshowedthatglobaldeformationoftheplate(whichcanbeflat,curvedoratube)induceshigherlocaldeformationoftheholeduetoitslocallyhighercompliance.Furtherdevelopmentsreportedhereshowthatthisapproachcanbeappliedtogroupsofholesrelativetotheirorientation.Themorphologyofthesensillumininsectssuggeststhatgreatersensitivitycanbeachievedbyarrangingseveralholesinaregularpattern;thatiftheholeisovalitcanbe'aimed'tosensespecificstraindirections;andthateitherbycontrollingtheshapeoftheholeoritsrelationshipwithotherholesitcanhaveatunedresponsetodynamicstrains.Weinvestigatespaceapplicationsinwhichnovelbio-inspiredstrainsensorscouldsuccessfullybeused.
