Lignin depolymerization for phenolic monomers production by sustainable processes

摘要 Biomasswastes(almondshellandolivetreepruning)wereusedinthisworkasrawmaterialsfortheextractionofhighpurityligninbydifferentdelignificationmethods.Apretreatmentstagewascarriedouttoremovethemajorhemicellulosescontentinthesolidfeedstocks.Afterward,twosulfur-freepulpingprocesses(sodaandorganosolv)wereappliedtoextractthelargestfractionoflignin.Theextractedlignincontainedintheliquorswasisolatedusingselectiveprecipitationmethodstodesignatailor-madetechniqueforobtaininghigh-puritylignin(inallcasesmore90%ofpuritywasreached).Sodaprocessallowedtheextractionofmorelignin(around40%–47%)thanorganosolvprocess(lowerthan20%)regardlessofthelignocellulosicsourceemployed.Oncethedifferentligninsampleswereisolatedandcharacterized,theyweredepolymerizedfortheobtainingofsmallphenoliccompounds.Threemainstreamswereproducedafterthereaction:phenolicenrichedoil,residualligninandcoke.Afterthepurificationofthesefractions,theirquantificationsandcharacterizationwereconducted.Themostabundantproductofthereactionwasresidualligningeneratedbytheundesirablerepolymerizationoftheinitialligninwithyieldsaround30%–45%.Theyieldofthestreamenrichedinphenolicoilwashigherthan20%.Coke,thelowestadded-valueproduct,presentedayieldlowerthan12%inallthecases.Ligninfromorganosolvpresentedhigherphenolicoilyields,mainlyduetotheirlowermolecularsize.Thisparameterwas,thus,consideredakeyfactortoobtainhigheryields.
