摘要
FewerthanonemillionHIVinfectedindividualsarecurrentlyreceivinganti-retroviraltherapy.ThelimitationsofsuchtreatmenthaveunderscoredtheneedtodevelopmoreeffectivestrategiestocontrolthespreadandpathogenesisofHIV.Typically,naturallyoccurringprotectiveimmuneresponsesprovidetheparadigmforsuchdevelopment.ItisnowclearhoweverthatHIVcanutilisethemillieuofanactivatedimmunesystemtoitsownreplicativeadvantage.Mobilisationoftheimmuneresponse,intendedtothwartofHIVcontributestolackofimmunecontrolandthedevelopmentofprogressivediseaseinthemajorityofinfected,untreatedindividuals.FurtherdelineationoftheintimateinteractionsbetweentheHIVandtheimmunesystemwillbecriticalandrecentadvancesinthisdirectionarediscussed.
