Forestmanagementinseveralborealcountriesisstronglyfocusedonconifersbecausetheyaremoreproductive,thetechnicalqualityoftheirstemsisbetter,andtheirwoodfibersarelongerascomparedtobroadleaves.Favoringconifersinforestmanagementleadstosimpleforeststructureswithlowresilienceanddiversity.Suchforestsareriskyinthefaceofclimatechangeandfluctuatingtimberprices.ClimatechangeincreasesthevitalityofmanyforestpestsandpathogenssuchasHeterobasidionspp.andIpstypographusL.whichattackmainlyspruce.Winddamagesarealsoincreasingbecauseofashorterperiodoffrozensoiltoprovideafirmanchorageagainststorms.Wind-throwntreesserveasstartingpointsforbarkbeetleoutbreaks.Increasingtheproportionofbroadleavedspeciesmightalleviatesomeoftheseproblems.Thisstudypredictsthelong-term(150years)consequencesofcurrentconifer-orientedforestmanagementintwoforestareas,andcomparedthismanagementwithsilviculturalstrategiesthatpromotemixedforestsandbroadleavedspecies.Theresultsshowthat,intheabsenceofdamages,conifer-orientedforestrywouldleadto5-10%highertimberyieldsandcarbonsequestration.Thesomewhatlowercarbonsequestrationofbroadleavedforestswascounteractedbytheirhigheralbedo(reflectance).Mixedandbroadleafforestswerebetterprovidersofrecreationalamenities.Speciesdiversitywasmuchhigherinmixedstandandbroadleaf-orientedsilvicultureatstandandforestlevels.Theanalysisindicatesthatconifer-orientedforestmanagementproducesrathersmallanduncertaineconomicbenefitsatahighcostinresilienceanddiversity.
