  • 简介:BilateralCochlearimplants(CIs)improvedspeechintelligibility,speechperceptioninbackgroundnoise,andsoundlocalizationinquietandnoisysituations.However,itisunclearwhethertheseadvantagesessentiallyresultinbinauralintegrationofacousticstimulifromeachear.Inthisstudy,weinvestigatedtheeffectivenessofbinauralintegrationbybilateralCIsplacementusingbinauralhearingtestsandsubjectiveauditoryperceptualassessment.A61-year-oldbilateralCIssubjectunderwentthefollowingfourtests:theJapaneseHearinginNoiseTest(HINT-J),thedichoticlisteningtest(DLT),theRapidlyAlternatingSpeechPerception(RASP)test,andsubjectiveauditoryperceptualassessment.TheHINTJscorewassignificantlyhigherforbilateralCIsthanforaunilateralCI.However,DLTandtheRASPtestrevealedcontradictoryresults.Subjectiveauditoryperceptualassessmentrevealedactiveandbrightimpressionsforbilateralhearing,whichwerealsonoisyandstrongcomparedwiththoseforunilateralhearing.TheresultsofthisstudyrevealedthatbilateralCIsimprovedspeechperceptioninbackgroundnoiseandanimprovedauditoryimpression,althoughthebilateralintegrationabilitieswerenotimproved.ThiswasprobablybecausethepatientwasrequiredtocombineinformationfromthetwoearsintoasingleperceptioninDLTandtheRASPtest.Morelongitudinaldatashouldbecollectedandanalyzedinfuturestudiestoevaluatethelong-termeffectsofbilateralCIs.

  • 简介:InthehistoryofformalEnglisheducationinJapan,grammarusedtobethemainstream.Inthesecondaryeducationsystem,teachersusedtospendmanyhoursteachinggrammartothestudents.However,ithasbeenreplacedbytheaural/oralmethodofteachingaforeignlanguage.Therewasevenaremarkthatteachinggrammarhindersstudentsfromcommunicatingfluently.Literally,therewasatimewhengrammarwassetasideinformalEnglisheducation.However,theauthornoticedthatingrammarclasses,thestudentsspeakEnglishmoreloudlyandconfidentlywithoutmuchhesitationthaninothertypesofEnglishclasses.Oneofthereasonsisthattheyarenotworriedaboutthecontentsofthespeeches.Theyaresimplyconcentratingontheforms.Theyarenotafraidofmakingmajormistakes,andtheerrorstheymakeareminorsotheydonotfeelembarrassedinpublic.TheatmosphereofthegrammarclassesisverypositiveandthestudentsenjoyspeakingEnglish.Inthispaper,theauthorshowshowgrammarclassescancontributetotheacquisitionofthestudents'speakingabilitiesandmanners."Learninggrammarwasapreciousexperience",onestudentreportedafterthecourse.

  • 简介:CriticalthinkingabilitiesarenotsufficientlydevelopedacrossthecurriculumofacademicprogramsinChile,neitherinschoolsnorinuniversities.Consideringtheseskillsaresoessentialforeveryhumanbeinginallaspectsoftheirlife,itisanecessityfornewprogramstobecreatedandtaughtfromschoolthroughuniversity.Thepurposeofthisstudywastoanalyzethedevelopmentofcriticalthinkingabilitiesin109first-yearcollegestudentsatAndrOsBelloUniversity,andtoevaluateiftheirinstitutionoforigin(private,public,andsubsidyschools)wasasignificantfactorintheirskilldevelopment.Todoso,thetestforcriticalthinkingwasapplied,measuringthelevelofagreementthestudentsshowedwhenaskediftheyapplytheseabilitiesineverydaysituations.Thistestincludedtheexplorationofspeaking,reading,andwrittingabilities,whichweredividedintwodimensions,substantiveanddialogical.Theresultsshowedthatthereisnodependencebetweenthetypeofschoolanddevelopmentofcriticalthinkingskills,althoughtherewasasmalltendencythatprivateschoolsshowbetterresults,whichiscoherentwiththefactthattheseschoolsconcentratethemajorityofdebateandcriticalthinkingprogramsinthecountry.However,theseprogramsarestillinsufficient,whichisprovedbythefactthat,accordingtoourresults,thevastmajorityofstudentsdonotreachadesirablelevelofdevelopmentintheircriticalthinkingskills.ThisresearchwasthestartpointfortwoveryinnovativeandimportantacademicprogramsinChile:theCenterforCriticalThinkingandDebateDevelopmentthroughgeneraleducationatAndresBelloUniversity(mandatoryforallstudents),andtheDebateandCriticalThinkingProgramacrossthecurriculumprogramatLincolnInternationalAcademy(insertedinthecurriculumforscholarsfrom5thto1lthgrade).
